The Heresy of Mortal Flesh

She could offer the Demigod a defiant smile, challenge his authority with a raised eyebrow, and deliver a perfectly insolent remark. Yet the moment his mouth crashed against hers, his arms encircling her slender figure and lifting her from the floor in the violence of his ardor, the betrayal began.

Her breath caught, her knees surrendered their usefulness, and her eyes abandoned every pretense of indifference.

He read these confessions with the satisfaction of a god who had mastered a language few mortals had been permitted to study. Every faltering breath, every searching glance, every audacious attempt to reclaim the advantage betrayed how thoroughly she welcomed his command.

There was no ceremony to their embrace, no courteous pretense of courtship. Only the mingled fragrance of her perfume and his skin, the taste of a kiss that left her lips swollen, and the unmistakable knowledge that neither intended to behave as polite society would prescribe.

He possessed the arrogance of an ancient deity and the alarming advantage of being flesh and blood. She, who had never been particularly obedient to heaven, found herself rather more susceptible to the authority of the man beneath her.

And there, beneath his imperious gaze, she invoked the names of gods she had never worshipped, until her insolence gave way to a languid, breathless contentment.

It was a most grievous act of heresy.

For she had offered her prayers to a mortal man.

And he had answered them.
